=============

First in our “Valiant Ladies” series is revolutionary war hero Molly Pitcher.

“Molly! Pitcher!” was heard in the Battle of Monmouth: led by George Washington; the Continental Army successfully fought the British in Monmouth County New Jersey on June 28, 1778.  Mary (Molly was a common nickname) Ludwig Hays McCauley followed her husband William Hays into war, cooking and caring for the soldiers. In the Battle of Monmouth, Mary carried pitchers of water to cool the cannons and the men.  When her husband collapsed from the heat, she took up his cannon position, and was allegedly named “Sergeant Molly” by Washington.  Mary’s grave in Carlisle PA has a statue of her holding a cannon ramrod.
